Shell script

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A shell script is a computer program. It is a list of commands. These commands run in a Unix shell. A shell is a tool that reads your typing. It tells the computer what to do next.

Scripts can do many jobs. They can move files. They can run other programs. They can also print text. Some scripts are called wrappers. A wrapper sets up a workspace. Then it runs a program. Finally, it cleans up the work.

Scripts can act as shortcuts. You can make a long command very short. For example, you can make a new command called "l". This can run a long command to list files. It saves you from typing a lot.

Scripts can also run batch jobs. This means the computer does many steps alone. You do not have to wait to type each step. This is great for building new programs. It can also change file types. A script can turn many JPEG images into PNG images. This makes hard tasks much faster.
