Shell script

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A shell script is a special type of computer program. It is designed to be run by a Unix shell. A shell is a command-line interpreter. This tool reads the commands you type. It then tells the computer how to follow them. Shell scripts are very useful for many tasks. They can move files or run other programs. They can also print text to your screen. Sometimes, a script is called a wrapper. A wrapper sets up a workspace for a program. It runs the program and then cleans up the work.

Learning how a script works is quite interesting. It often starts with a special first line. This line is called a shebang or a hash-bang. It starts with the characters #!. The system uses this line to find the right interpreter. An interpreter is a program that reads the script. After the shebang, the script lists commands in order. You can also add comments to your script. Comments are notes for people to read. They start with a hash symbol (#). The shell ignores these notes when it runs the code. This helps you explain what each part does.

People have used different kinds of shells for a long time. Many Unix-like systems use a POSIX shell. This is a standard type of shell. Two common examples are bash or zsh. In the 1980s, people used scripts to build programs. Later, they started using special tools called make for that job. Different computer systems use different names for these scripts. For example, MS-DOS and Win95 call them batch files. VMS calls them command procedures. Windows NT uses the term shell scripts. These different names all describe similar ways to automate tasks.

There are many specific names for different shell languages. The original Bourne shell is called sh. Many people now use GNU Bash. There is also the Debian Almquist shell, or dash. You might also see the Z shell. Some shells are not POSIX-compliant. These include Fish, Nushell, and xonsh. Xonsh is a shell based on the Python language. Some shells are very similar to programming languages like C or Tcl. You can even find shells based on Ruby or Java. Each one has its own way of working.

Shell scripts are great because they are very fast to write. You can use the same commands you type by hand. This makes it easy to fix mistakes, which is called debugging. However, scripts can be slow for huge jobs. They are often slower than compiled code. You must also be very careful with your typing. A single extra space can cause a big error. For example, a mistake could delete everything on a computer. Despite this, scripts are wonderful for small, quick tasks. They act like glue to connect different computer parts together.
