Sharovipteryx was a very unusual gliding reptile from a long time ago.

It lived about 225 million years ago during the Triassic period. This animal was different from most other gliders we know. Most gliding animals have skin membranes on their front limbs. However, Sharovipteryx had its membrane around its pelvis instead. This special skin is called a patagium. This unique body part helped the creature move through the air.

This reptile used its body to glide like a small plane. The patagium stretched between its very long hind legs and its tail. Scientists believe it flew like a delta wing aircraft. A delta wing is a triangular shape used on many jets. To stay steady, the animal could bend its tail up or down. This movement created drag to help it steer. It may have also used its tiny front limbs to help. These front limbs could act like canards, which are small wings used for control.

We know about this creature because of a single, special fossil. Aleksandr Grigorevich Sharov first described the fossil in 1971. He originally named the species Podopteryx mirabilis. This name means "foot wing" because of the skin on the legs. Later, in 1981, Richard Cowen gave it a new name. He chose Sharovipteryx to honor the man who found it. This new name helped avoid confusion with a type of insect.

The fossil was found in the Madygen Formation in Kyrgyzstan. This place is on the southwest edge of the Fergana Valley. The discovery happened in 1965 in what was then part of the U.S.S.R. The fossil shows a slender skull and a very long neck. The body is about 12 centimeters long from shoulder to pelvis. Its hind legs were also very large for its size. The tibia bone was about 3.5 centimeters long. The femur was at least 3 centimeters long.

Sharovipteryx was not a typical lizard. It was an archosauromorph, which is a group of reptiles. This means it was more closely related to birds and crocodiles. We see similar traits in a relative found in Poland. This relative is named Ozimek volans. It was described in 2016 and also appears to be a glider. Looking at these fossils helps us see how early animals learned to fly. It shows us how many different ways life can move through the sky.
