This name refers to its position east of the Taihang Mountains. Its counterpart, Shanxi, means "west of the mountains." Shandong sits on the eastern edge of the North China Plain. It serves as a vital cultural and religious hub for China. The province is a central site for Taoism, Chinese Buddhism, and Confucianism.

It holds one of the longest histories of continuous worship globally. South of the provincial capital, Jinan, lie many Buddhist temples. These sites were once among the most important in China. The city of Qufu provides a different spiritual connection. It was the birthplace of Confucius and became the center of Confucianism.

Ancient history in the region began with Neolithic cultures. These included the Houli, Beixin, Dawenkou, Longshan, and Yueshi cultures.

During the Spring and Autumn period, regional states emerged. The state of Qi was a major political power based in Linzi. The state of Lu was smaller but became famous for Confucius. Eventually, the cultural influence of Lu eclipsed that of Qi. This legacy is still seen in the province's official abbreviation.

Shandong's political history involved many shifts in power. The Qin dynasty conquered Qi in 221 BC. Later, the Han dynasty created commanderies in the north and south. During the Three Kingdoms period, the province belonged to Cao Wei. After many periods of instability, the Sui dynasty restored unity in 589. During the Song dynasty, the name "Shandong East Circuit" and "Shandong West Circuit" first appeared.

This era also saw the discovery of many buried Buddhist statues in Qingzhou. These were likely hidden during religious repressions by Emperor Huizong.

The early modern era brought significant economic and social changes. The Ming dynasty created the modern province. In 1376, the capital moved to Jinan, which remains the capital today. The Grand Canal helped cities like Jining and Linqing flourish through grain transport. However, the Little Ice Age caused crop failures and famine. This led to many peasant rebellions. In the late 19th century, Western powers began to influence the coast. Germany leased the port of Qingdao, investing heavily in its harbor and rail yards.

Its economy is the third-largest provincial economy in China.
