Shandong is currently a massive economic and demographic force. It is home to over 100 million inhabitants. This makes it China's second-most populous province. 

Education and scientific research are major strengths for the province. Shandong is a leader in Chinese research and learning. It contains 153 higher education institutions. This ranks it second in East China and fourth in all of China. The Nature Index highlights the scientific output of its cities.
