Jinan is the capital city of the Shandong province in East China.

It is a massive urban center with a population of approximately 9.2 million people. Because of its size and importance, it serves as a major national hub for administration, economics, and transportation. The city has held sub-provincial administrative status since 1994. It is also a globally significant center for academic study. According to the Nature Index 2025 Science Cities report, Jinan is ranked as the 27th city in the world for scientific research.

The city is famously nicknamed the "City of Springs."

This name refers to its 72 artesian springs, which are natural water sources that rise from underground. These springs are located within the urban center and the surrounding areas. The name "Jinan" itself has a specific meaning. It literally translates to "south of the Ji." This refers to the ancient Ji River that once flowed north of the city.

However, the geography changed significantly in 1852. During that year, the Yellow River changed its course northward. This shift caused the Ji River to disappear from its original bed.

Human history in this region spans more than 4,000 years.

One of the earliest known groups was the Neolithic Longshan culture. In 1928, researchers discovered evidence of this culture at Chengziya in the Zhangqiu District. The Longshan people were skilled at making wheel-made pottery. They are particularly famous for creating black "egg-shell pottery." Some of these pieces were incredibly thin, with walls measuring less than 1 millimeter.

Archaeologists have also found significant treasures from the Han dynasty. In the 1990s, excavations at Shuangru Mountain uncovered more than 2,000 artifacts. These included jade swords, masks, and pillows, which demonstrate the great wealth of the ancient Kingdom of Jibei.

Jinan has also been a center for profound intellectual and religious development. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the area was divided between the states of Lu and Qi. The state of Qi even built portions of the Great Wall of Qi across Changqing County.

The region produced influential thinkers like Zou Yan, who developed the concepts of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. Later, starting in the 5th century CE, Buddhism flourished in the area. This led to the construction of many religious sites, such as the Lingyan Temple and various cave temples in the southern hills.

The city's administrative center has shifted many times throughout history. From the Zhou dynasty to the Western Jin dynasty, the main settlement was the "city of East Pingling" in modern-day Zhangqiu. During the Western Jin Dynasty, the center moved west to Licheng. This location remained the administrative heart until the Qing dynasty. In the modern era, the Lixia district became a major settlement. The name "Lixia" comes from the city's position at the foot of Mount Li, which lies to the south.

In more recent history, Jinan became a vital transportation and industrial node. The 19th-century northward shift of the Yellow River connected the city to the Grand Canal. This improved trade with northern Shandong and southern Hebei. The arrival of the German-built Jiaoji railway in 1904 and the Jinpu railway in 1912 cemented its role as a trade hub.

The city became a major center for trading goods like cotton, grain, peanuts, and tobacco. It also grew into a significant industrial center, second only to Qingdao in the province.

Today, Jinan is a premier destination for higher education.

It hosts several major universities, including the University of Jinan and Shandong Normal University.

Shandong University is particularly notable as a member of the Double First-Class Construction, making it one of China's most prestigious institutions. The city's modern infrastructure also supports its large population. Residents use the Jinan Metro and large railway stations to navigate the growing metropolitan area.
