Shahriar is a significant urban center located in Iran. It is situated within the Tehran province. Specifically, the city is part of the Central District. It also serves as the capital of Shahriar County. This means it is the main administrative hub for the entire county. As a capital, it holds a central role in the local government.

The city functions as a vital link for regional transportation. The Shahriar Municipality and Suburbs Bus Organization manages local transit. This organization operates a network of municipal buses. These buses connect Shahriar to several larger, important cities. For example, they provide routes to Tehran. They also offer connections to the city of Karaj. Beyond these major cities, the bus system serves many smaller towns. This network helps move people across the surrounding area.

Shahriar has experienced significant growth and administrative changes since the mid-20th century. The Municipality of Shahriar was officially established in 1953. In that year, the city was quite small. The total population was only 5,000 people. Since then, the city has transformed into a much larger urban area. This growth is reflected in its expanding municipal services. The establishment of the municipality allowed for organized local governance.

Demographic data shows a rapid increase in the number of residents. We can see this through the results of several national censuses. In 2006, the census recorded 189,120 people living in the city. These residents were organized into 24,039 households. Five years later, the population grew even more. The 2011 census counted 249,473 people. At that time, there were 75,014 households. This shows a steady upward trend in the number of families.

The most recent data from the 2016 census confirms this growth. The population reached 309,607 people in that year. These residents lived in 97,570 different households. Comparing these figures shows how much the city has expanded. The number of households has grown alongside the total population. This indicates that more people are settling in Shahriar. The city continues to be a major populated place in the province.

While Shahriar is a center for growth, it has also been near tragic events. On January 8, 2020, a serious incident occurred near the city. Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was shot down. This event took place in the vicinity of Shahriar. Sadly, all 176 people on board the aircraft were killed. This moment is a significant part of the recent history of the area. It is a somber event recorded in the city's timeline.

Today, Shahriar remains a key part of the Tehran province infrastructure. It acts as a bridge between smaller towns and major metropolitan areas. Its role as a county capital keeps it central to regional planning. The combination of transit, growing populations, and administrative importance defines it. It is a place where many different households live and work. The city continues to serve as a vital node in the Iranian landscape.
