Alborz is one of the 31 provinces located in Iran.

Alborz

It holds the title of being the smallest province in Iran by land area. The provincial capital is the city of Karaj. This city sits at the foothills of the Alborz mountains. It is located 40 km west of the city of Tehran. Because of its location near these mountains, it is part of a significant geographic region.

The province was officially established in 2010. Before this date, the land belonged to the Tehran province. To create Alborz, three specific counties were separated from Tehran. These counties were Karaj, Nazarabad, and Savojbolagh. This administrative change reorganized how the local government manages the region.

Demographics show that the majority of the population identifies as ethnic Persians. The population has grown steadily over the last several decades. In 2006, the counties that would become the province had 2,053,233 people. The first census after the province was formed in 2011 counted 2,412,513 people. By the 2016 census, the population reached 2,712,400 people.

The province is divided into several administrative areas called counties. Different counties have seen different levels of growth. For example, the Karaj County population grew from 1,709,481 in 2006 to 1,973,470 in 2016. Nazarabad County grew from 128,666 to 152,437 people in that same time. Savojbolagh County increased from 215,086 to 259,973 residents. New counties like Eshtehard, Fardis, and Taleqan were also part of the 2016 census data.

Most people in Alborz live in urban areas or cities. According to the 2016 census, 2,512,737 people lived in cities. This number represents over 92% of the total provincial population. Karaj is the largest urban center with 1,592,492 residents. Other significant cities include Fardis, which has 181,174 people, and Mohammadshahr, with 119,418 people. Nazarabad and Kamal Shahr also host large populations. Smaller cities include Asara, which has 1,339 people, and Taleqan, which has 3,545 people.

Transportation networks connect Alborz to other parts of Iran and beyond. The Tehran Metro is connected to Karaj via Line 5, which is dark green. There are three metro stations located within the province: Karaj, Mohammadshahr, and Golshahr. Additionally, a 25 km line runs from Golshahr to Hashtgerd. This specific line has a daily capacity of 250,000 passengers. Railway connections are also vital for the region. All trains traveling from Tehran to western Iran pass through Karaj. Many trains heading to Turkey also use this route. Most of these international and domestic trains stop at the Karaj railway station.

Road travel provides further access to the province and neighboring regions. Karaj is situated on Freeway 2, which links Tehran to Tabriz. For those using shared taxis, known as savari, several stations exist in Tehran. These stations are located in Vanak, Tajrish, Enghelab, and Azadi. The price for these trips varies between 40,000 and 50,000 rials depending on the specific route taken. These various systems of rail, road, and taxi service make Alborz a highly connected area.
