Sex-positive feminism is a movement about freedom. It focuses on the idea that sexual freedom is a key part of being free. These feminists believe that adults should be able to make their own choices. They do not want the government or other groups to control these activities. They want people to have the right to choose for themselves. This group includes many different types of people. They work with LGBT activists and people who study feminism.

This movement works in many different ways to support choice. They often build groups with people who have been left out of society. Some members are scholars who study how people live. Others are people who make adult films or work in the adult industry. They also support sex workers. These feminists believe that sex work should not be a crime. They argue that workers deserve to be treated with respect.

The history of this idea has several roots. Some people look back to early reformers who worked on sex education. These included people like Margaret Sanger and Alfred Kinsey. However, the modern version of the movement grew in the 1970s. During that time, many feminists had strong disagreements about sexual freedom. Some feminist groups wanted to limit certain kinds of media. They worried that some films were harmful to women.

In the late 1970s, a big debate started within the feminist movement. Some groups, like Women Against Pornography, were very against adult films. They believed these films were a cause of harm. In 1979, a writer named Ellen Willis wrote an important essay. She used the term "pro-sex feminism" to describe her view. She did not want feminism to be about only one single issue. She argued that restricting speech could also hurt feminists themselves.

Today, sex-positive feminism connects to many big ideas about human rights. It challenges the idea that society should have strict rules about how people express themselves. Some feminists believe that the way society is built limits these choices. They want to give people of all genders more opportunities. This movement also looks at how different cultures view men and women. For example, some cultures have different rules for men and women. Sex-positive feminists want to change these unfair standards.
