You can write it in two different ways. One way uses the Latin alphabet. The other way uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Both ways are highly phonemic. This means the letters match the sounds very closely. The grammar uses seven different cases for nouns and adjectives. Verbs also show if an action is finished or ongoing.

History shows how this language grew over time. Long ago, people used many different names. They called it "Slavic," "Illyrian," or "Bosnian."

In the mid-19th century, writers wanted a common standard. They met for the Vienna Literary Agreement in 1850. Writers like Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and Ljudevit Gaj led this work. They chose the Shtokavian dialect as their shared base. This helped people from different lands communicate better.

Many important events shaped the language in the 20th century. In 1954, the Novi Sad Agreement was signed. This agreement said Serbs, Croats, and Montenegrins shared one language.
