A sequel is a new work that grows from an earlier one.

This can be a book, a movie, a song, or even a video game. Usually, a sequel happens after the first story ends. It often uses the same characters and the same world.

Creators and publishers like making sequels because they are less risky. They can use characters that people already know and love. This is often easier than starting a brand new story from scratch. Audiences are often eager to see more of their favorite people.

There are many different ways to connect a sequel to the original. A direct sequel follows the first story right away. A prequel is a story that shows events from the past.

A midquel is a story that fits into the middle of an earlier work. For example, the movie Rogue One (2016) is an interquel. It takes place after one movie but before another. An intraquel focuses on events that happen inside a previous story. Some stories are even called parallel stories if they happen at the same time.

Other types of stories also share a special connection. A legacy sequel takes place much later in the timeline. These often feature new characters alongside the older ones. A standalone sequel is set in the same world but has no direct plot link.

A spiritual sequel is inspired by an old work but has no direct connection. It might share the same style or feeling. A spin-off stays in the same universe but follows different people. A crossover happens when characters from two different worlds meet. A reboot is a way to start a story over from the beginning.

Sequels have a long and interesting history. In the 1700s, authors used sequels to reach more readers. As more people started buying books, authors wanted to keep their fans interested. Writing sequels also helped authors prove they owned their stories. This was important when copyright laws were not very strong. In the 1930s, some musical sequels even put the year in their titles.

The movie Sanshiro Sugata Part II (1945) was the first numbered sequel in cinema history. Director Francis Ford Coppola later helped make numbered titles popular with The Godfather Part II (1974).

Sometimes, authors do not want anyone else to write sequels. In the 1700s, people sometimes wrote unauthorized sequels without permission. The author Cervantes was very unhappy about this with his book Don Quixote. He even killed the main character to stop others from writing more. Another author, Samuel Richardson, disliked people writing lewd stories about his character Pamela. These stories were often called parodies, like the famous Shamela. Today, sequels remain a huge part of how we enjoy stories and art.
