A sequel is a new story that continues an old one.

It might use the same people or settings. It can be a book, a film, or a game.

Many sequels use numbers in their titles. One of the first was a film called Sanshiro Sugata Part II.

Creators make sequels because they know people like the characters. It is less risky than starting a brand new story.

There are many ways to tell these stories. A prequel tells what happened before the first story. A midquel tells a story that fits in the middle. A legacy sequel follows the old world much later. It often shows new characters with the old ones. A spiritual sequel is inspired by an old work. But it has no direct link to the first story.

Other stories are related too. A spin-off stays in the same world but looks at new people. A crossover lets characters from two different stories meet. A reboot starts a story over from the beginning. Sometimes, a story runs at the same time as the original. This is called a parallel.
