arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A plot is how a story moves.

Story v. plot
Story v. plot

It is more than just a list of things that happen. A plot links events together using cause and effect. This means one event leads to another. You can think of it as saying "and so."

In a story, some scenes are very important. These scenes move the action forward. Other scenes might be pretty to see, but they do not change the plot.

In Cinderella, the glass shoe fitting her foot is a key plot part. It is what helps the prince find her.

Some people study how stories are built.

Freytag's Pyramid with English text

A man named Gustav Freytag described a five-part structure. He called it a pyramid. It starts with an introduction to set the mood. Then, the rising action builds up tension. Next comes the climax, which is a big turning point. After that, the story has a falling action. Finally, it reaches the end, called the resolution. Writers use these steps to keep us interested in the tale.
