Theme (narrative)

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A theme is a big idea in a story. It is a main topic or a message. A theme can be a single word like love or loss. It can also be a short phrase. For example, a theme might be about the dangers of being too greedy.

Themes are parts of fiction. They work with the plot and the characters. A story might have just one theme. Long books, plays, or movies often have many themes. Some themes are about things all people know. They might ask hard questions about how to live well.

Authors use special ways to show a theme. One way is called leitwortstil. This is a German term for a leading word style. It means using the same words many times. This helps the reader notice the idea. In one book, the phrase "So it goes" repeats often.

Another way is thematic patterning. This is when an author uses a recurring motif. A motif is a repeating idea or symbol. In the book Of Mice and Men, many scenes show loneliness. This helps the reader feel the theme of being alone.
