Because it has a major port, many ships come there to trade. The city is also known for being very clean. It was named the cleanest tourist destination in Southeast Asia from 2020 to 2022. Many different groups of people live there together. Most of the people are Javanese, but there is also a large Chinese community.

In the past, the city grew by following new paths. At first, most activities happened along the river. People met at markets to trade goods. Later, big projects changed how the city worked. The Great Mail Road was built in 1847 to connect many cities. This made Semarang a center for selling farm goods. Soon after, the city built railroads to move things even faster.

This helped the city grow from a small settlement into a large center for trade.

The history of Semarang goes back a very long time. It was known as Bergota in the 9th century. Later, it was a small fishing village. In the 1500s, an Islamic school was built there. By 1678, the Dutch East India Company began to take control. The Dutch built a large, five-sided fortress to protect their settlement.

Over many years, the Dutch and British both ruled parts of the area. Eventually, Semarang became the capital of Central Java.

Many people live in the city today. In 2010, there were about 1.5 million people. By the 2020 census, that number grew to over 1.6 million.

Even more people live in the wider metropolitan area, which has over 6 million people. The city is divided into 16 districts. These districts are further split into 177 small urban villages. This large population makes it the ninth most populous city in all of Indonesia.

Semarang is a place where the old and new meet. You can see historic buildings in the Old Town. You can also see modern things like the Ahmad Yani International Airport.
