Many powerful kingdoms ruled Central Java throughout its history. In the 7th century, Hinduism and Buddhism arrived from South Asia. A king named Sri Sanjaya started the Mataram kingdom in 732 AD. During this time, great monuments like the Borobudur temple were built.
