The province is bordered by West Java to the west and East Java to the east. To the north, it meets the Java Sea. The south is bordered by the Indian Ocean and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The province also includes several offshore islands. These include the Karimun Jawa Islands in the north and Nusakambangan in the south.

Central Java is a very crowded region with a large population. In the 2020 Census, the population was 36,516,035 people. By mid-2025, the population estimate rose to 38,233,930. This includes 19,203,430 males and 19,030,500 females. The population grows at a rate of about 330,000 people every year. This makes it the third-most populous province in Indonesia. It also ranks third in population on the island of Java. The total area of the province is 34,347.43 km2.

The history of the region reaches back to the prehistoric era. Humans or their ancestors inhabited the area a very long time ago. Scientists discovered fossils of Homo erectus along the banks of the Bengawan Solo river. These fossils are often called "Java Man." They were found in the 1890s by Eugène Dubois. He was a Dutch anatomist and geologist. These remains are believed to be about 1.7 million years old.

The Sangiran site is a very important prehistoric location.

Around 3,000 BC, new groups of people settled in the area. These were Mongoloid Austronesians who replaced earlier Australoid peoples. They brought new technologies like pottery and outrigger canoes. They also brought the bow and arrow. These settlers introduced domesticated animals such as pigs, fowls, and dogs. They also began cultivating rice and millet. Recorded history in the region began in the 7th century AD. During this time, Hinduism and Buddhism arrived from South Asia. The Chinese monk Hui-neng even visited a port city called Hēlíng during this era.

Many powerful kingdoms shaped the landscape of Central Java. In 732 AD, a Shaivite king named Sri Sanjaya established the Mataram kingdom. This was recorded in the Canggal inscription. The Sailendra dynasty also arose and followed Buddhism. They built the famous Borobudur temple complex.

Later, the Majapahit Empire became a dominant commercial power. It controlled many shipping lanes and ports. By the late 16th century, Islam became the most common religion. The Sultanate of Demak was the first recorded Islamic kingdom in Java. Eventually, the Mataram Sultanate grew to become a dominant force.

European influence changed the region through colonial rule. Dutch traders arrived in the late 16th century via the East India Company. Internal disputes and Dutch intervention eventually split the Mataram kingdom. The Treaty of Giyanti in 1755 divided it into Surakarta and Yogyakarta. Later, the Dutch enforced the Cultivation System. This required farmers to grow cash crops like sugar and indigo instead of rice. This system led to famines and epidemics in the 1840s. The modern predecessor of the province was named Gouvernement van Midden-Java in the 1900s.

World War II brought significant hardship to the province. The Imperial Japanese Army landed on Java in March 1942. The Dutch East Indies surrendered to Japan shortly after. During the occupation, many people suffered from starvation and ill-treatment. Thousands were taken as forced labourers, known as romusha. A UN report stated that four million people died in Indonesia during this occupation. In 1944–45, famine killed about 2.4 million people in Java. After Japan surrendered, Indonesia proclaimed its independence on August 17, 1945. The modern province of Central Java was officially formed on August 15, 1950.

Today, Central Java is considered the "heart" of Javanese culture. Because most Indonesians are of Javanese descent, the province has a major impact on the country. It influences the social, political, and economic life of the whole nation. While it is a Javanese center, it is also home to many other groups. These include the Sundanese, Chinese Indonesians, Arab Indonesians, and Indian Indonesians. The province remains a vital and diverse part of the Indonesian archipelago.
