She is widely recognized as the "Queen of Tejano Music." This title reflects her massive impact on popular music and fashion. During the late 20th century, she became one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers. Media outlets even referred to her as the "Tejano Madonna" due to her clothing choices. Her work helped catapult the Tejano genre into the mainstream market. She remains ranked among the most influential Latin artists of all time.

Tejano music is a specific genre with a unique sound. It was popularized by Mexicans living in the United States. The style incorporates German influences, such as polka, alongside jazz and country music. Selena performed this Spanish-language music despite it being a male-dominated field. In the 1980s, she faced significant challenges in the industry. Many Texas venues refused to book her because she was a woman. However, her talent eventually overcame these barriers. She won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She went on to win that award for nine consecutive years.

Selena's musical career began within her own family.

Her father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., was a former musician. He noticed her perfect pitch and timing when she was only six years old. The family formed the band Selena y Los Dinos. This group included her siblings, A.B. on bass guitar and Suzette on drums. They toured in an old refurbished bus named "Big Bertha." In the early years, the family often performed for food. They played at weddings, fairs, and street corners to support themselves.

Her professional growth accelerated after signing with EMI Latin in 1989.

Her brother, A.B., became her principal songwriter and music producer. This partnership helped create several landmark recordings. Her 1992 album, Entre a Mi Mundo, was a major breakthrough. It peaked at number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. One of its most famous singles was "Como la Flor." This era established her as a major commercial force in Latin music.

Selena achieved several historic milestones through her recordings. In 1994, her album Live! won the Grammy Award for Best Mexican/American Album. This was the first time a female Tejano artist received this honor. Her 1994 release, Amor Prohibido, became one of the best-selling Latin albums in the United States. This album is credited with creating the first marketable era for Tejano music. It helped the genre become a popular Latin music subgenre. Throughout her career, Selena sold approximately 18 million records worldwide.

Tragedy struck on March 31, 1995, when Selena was shot and killed.

The perpetrator was Yolanda Saldívar, a former manager of Selena's "Selena Etc." boutiques. Saldívar was later convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Despite this loss, Selena's popularity continued to grow. Two weeks after her death, Texas Governor George W. Bush declared April 16 as Selena Day in Texas. Her posthumous album, Dreaming of You, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200. This made her the first Latin artist to achieve that specific feat.

Selena's legacy continues through various media and cultural connections. In 1997, Warner Bros. released a biographical film titled "Selena." The movie starred Jennifer Lopez, which helped launch Lopez's career into global fame. More recently, Netflix released a series titled "Selena: The Series" starring Christian Serratos. Her life serves as a bridge between Tejano traditions and mainstream American pop culture. She remains a symbol of Mexican-American identity and musical excellence.
