Many people call her the "Queen of Tejano Music." Tejano is a musical style made by Mexicans living in the United States. It mixes sounds from polka, jazz, and country music. Selena was a very important star in the late 20th century. She helped Tejano music become popular with many different people. People also loved her sense of fashion. Some even called her the "Tejano Madonna" because of her clothes.

Selena grew up in a musical family in Texas. Her father, Abraham, was a former musician. He noticed Selena had perfect pitch when she was only six. In 1980, the family opened a Tex-Mex restaurant called Papa Gayo's. Selena and her siblings performed there often. Her brother A.B. played the bass guitar. Her sister Suzette played the drums. Later, they formed the band Selena y Los Dinos. They traveled to play at weddings and fairs in an old bus named "Big Bertha."

Her journey to fame was not always easy. In the 1980s, many people thought Tejano music was only for men. Some venues in Texas even refused to book her because she was a woman. However, Selena proved them wrong with her talent. She won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She actually won that same award nine times in a row. In 1989, she signed with the label EMI Latin. This helped her reach a much larger audience.

Selena released many successful albums during her career.

Her 1992 album, Entre a Mi Mundo, stayed at number one for eight months. One of her most famous songs is "Como la Flor." In 1994, her album Live! won a Grammy Award. This was the first time a female Tejano artist won that award. Her album Amor Prohibido also became a huge hit. It helped make Tejano music a very popular style of music. She eventually sold about 18 million records around the world.

Selena's life had both great joy and great sadness. She was killed on March 31, 1995, by Yolanda Saldívar. Saldívar was a former manager of Selena's boutiques.
