He was born in 1940 in the village of Huentitán El Alto, Jalisco. As a young boy, he received a guitar at age eight. He practiced folk music and learned to play the instrument. His family had a ranch, but selling milk was not enough to support them. After elementary school, his family moved to Tijuana. As a teenager, he worked many jobs like a bricklayer and a painter. He often sang while he worked, which led companies to hire him just to hear his voice. Eventually, he began singing in restaurants and weddings with mariachi groups.

Fernández eventually moved to Mexico City to find success in music. In 1966, he received his first offers to record albums. He signed with CBS Records of Mexico and released albums like "Soy de Abajo." His fame grew quickly after the song "Volver Volver" became a huge hit in 1976. This song was so popular that twenty other singers covered it. By the 1980s, he was a major star across the Americas. He even built his own ranch called "Los 3 Potrillos." This ranch became a special place for his music production. In 1984, he played a concert for 54,000 people at the Plaza de Toros México.

He earned many prestigious awards during his lifetime.

In his later years, Fernández continued to share his gift with the world. He retired from live stage performances in 2016. He said he wanted to retire to enjoy his work. He held a massive farewell concert at the Estadio Azteca. More than 80,000 people attended this free event. He sang over 40 songs for more than four hours. Even after retiring from the stage, he kept recording new music. He passed away on December 12, 2021. He remains one of the best-selling regional Mexican artists of all time.
