He lived during the early Edo period. Some say he was born between 1635 and 1643. He was also a samurai and a feudal officer. People often call him "Japan's Newton." This is because his work was very advanced. He helped start a new way of doing math in Japan. This style of math is known as wasan.

Seki learned many things from old Chinese books. He studied books like the Jinkōki and the Yang Hui suan fa. These books taught him about algebra and numbers. He used these ideas to solve very hard problems. One way he did this was by using kanji characters. He used these characters to represent unknown numbers in equations. This new system helped mathematicians work with many variables at once. It made their math much more powerful.

Seki worked on many big ideas during his life. He wanted to understand how stars and planets move. To do this, he studied old Chinese calendars. He also worked on a special number called pi. Pi is used to measure circles. Seki calculated pi correctly to ten decimal places. He used a method that was later found again in the 20th century.

He also studied things called determinants and resultants. These are tools used to solve groups of equations.

His work happened at the same time as famous thinkers in Europe. Scientists like Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz were also working on math. Seki did his work on his own in Japan. He created his own ways to solve problems without help from the West. In 1674, he published a book called Hatsubi Sanpō. This book gave answers to fifteen difficult math problems. His work was so good that it changed how people studied math in Japan for a long time.

Today, we still remember the work of Seki Takakazu. His ideas helped create a whole school of Japanese mathematics. This school lasted until the end of the Edo period. Even space scientists remember him. They named an asteroid, 7483 Sekitakakazu, after him. His many books and writings are still studied by historians. He showed the world that math can be a beautiful way to understand the universe.
