It was made by Sega to follow the Genesis. Sega began building it in 1992. The machine uses CD-ROMs for its games. These are small discs that hold a lot of data.

The Saturn has a very complex design. It uses eight processors to run.

Two of these are called SH-2 chips. These are the main brains of the system. Sega and Hitachi worked together to make them. The Saturn also has video display processors. These parts help the machine show 2D and 3D pictures.

The Saturn was a big hit in Japan. It sold very well there. However, it did not do as well in the United States. In the U.S., Sega released it much earlier than planned. This surprise launch upset many stores. Many games were also only made for Japan. The Saturn sold 9.26 million units in total. It was later replaced by the Dreamcast in 1998.
