It was made by Sega to follow the Genesis. Sega began building it in 1992. The machine uses CD-ROMs for its games. These are small discs that hold a lot of data.

The Saturn has a very complex design. It uses eight processors to run.

The Saturn was a big hit in Japan. It sold very well there. However, it did not do as well in the United States. In the U.S., Sega released it much earlier than planned. This surprise launch upset many stores. Many games were also only made for Japan. The Saturn sold 9.26 million units in total. It was later replaced by the Dreamcast in 1998.

It was made by Sega to follow their successful Genesis system. This machine belongs to the fifth generation of video game consoles. It used CD-ROM discs to hold its games. These discs could store much more data than older cartridges. The Saturn was built to bring arcade-quality fun into the home.

Inside the machine, the way it works is very complex. It uses a dual-CPU architecture with eight different processors.

Two main brains are the SH-2 chips. These are called SuperH RISC Engines. Sega and Hitachi worked together to build them in 1993. A single chip could not calculate a whole 3D world alone. Because of this, the system uses many parts to work together. It also has video display processors to help with 3D graphics.

Sega began working on the Saturn project in 1992. Hideki Sato supervised the development of this new system. The project was given the codename Saturn. It was built by the same team that made the System 32 arcade board. Sega wanted to make sure the console could handle 3D graphics. They also wanted to keep support for 2D games. This led to adding extra video parts in early 1994.

The Saturn had different lives in different parts of the world. It was a big success when it launched in Japan on November 22, 1994. In the United States, the launch was a surprise on May 11, 1995. This happened four months earlier than Sega had planned. This sudden change upset many stores that were not ready. Because of this, the Saturn struggled to compete with the Sony PlayStation. It sold 9.26 million units worldwide before it was discontinued in 1998.

You might recognize some of the games from this era. The Saturn had great titles like Nights into Dreams. It also featured the Panzer Dragoon and Virtua Fighter series.

These games were often based on popular arcade machines. Many people remember the Sonic the Hedgehog series from Sega. While the Saturn was not as popular in the West, it left a mark on gaming history. It was eventually succeeded by the Dreamcast in 1998.

The Saturn was designed to bring high-quality arcade experiences into the home. It utilized the CD-ROM format for its software. This allowed for much larger amounts of data than traditional cartridges. While it was a significant technological step, its complex design led to mixed results in the global market.

The internal architecture of the Saturn is notably complex. It features a dual-CPU design that relies on eight different processors to function.

The primary processing power comes from two Hitachi SH-2 chips. These are known as SuperH RISC Engines. Sega and Hitachi formed a joint venture in 1993 to create these specific processors. Engineers chose this dual configuration because a single CPU could not handle the calculations required for a 3D world.

To improve 3D texture mapping and 2D performance, Sega added a second video display processor (VDP) in early 1994. This was a response to the rising technical capabilities of Sony's upcoming PlayStation.

Hardware development for the Saturn followed a specific sequence of design choices. The project began in 1992 under the supervision of Hideki Sato. The development team was the same group that created the System 32 arcade board. Sato originally considered using the Model 1 arcade hardware as a base. However, he chose a different path to ensure developers focused on sprites could still support the system.

In 1993, Sega also restructured its internal studios. They moved developers from the arcade division into new console teams. This was done to ensure high-quality 3D games were ready for the launch. New specialized groups, such as Team Andromeda, were formed during this period.

The Saturn had different release histories across various global regions. It launched first in Japan on November 22, 1994, at a price of ¥44,800. In Japan, the system was initially very successful. The arcade port Virtua Fighter was a major driver of this early success.

However, the North American launch on May 11, 1995, was much more difficult. Sega of Japan ordered a surprise launch that occurred four months earlier than planned. This sudden release upset many retailers like Walmart and Best Buy. These stores were not prepared to receive or sell the hardware immediately. Consequently, the Saturn struggled to gain a foothold in the United States.

Market competition significantly impacted the Saturn's lifespan. In the United States, the console lost market share after the Nintendo 64 debuted in late 1996. Sony's PlayStation also proved to be a formidable competitor. Sony attracted many third-party developers by offering a low $10 licensing fee. They also provided excellent development tools and a faster 7-to-10-day ordering system. This was much more efficient than the 10-to-12-week lead times required for cartridges. Because of these competitive pressures, Sega discontinued the Saturn in 1998.

Despite its commercial struggles, the Saturn produced several highly regarded games. The library included titles such as Nights into Dreams and the Panzer Dragoon series. The Virtua Fighter series also remains a notable part of its legacy.

Many of these games were ports of successful arcade titles. However, much of the best software was concentrated in the Japanese market. In the West, the library was often seen as limited. The cancellation of Sonic X-treme, a planned 3D Sonic game, also affected the system's reputation. The Saturn eventually sold 9.26 million units worldwide before being replaced.

The legacy of the Saturn is tied to the broader evolution of 3D gaming. It served as a bridge between the 2D sprite era and the 3D polygonal era. The complexity of its multiprocessing architecture was intended to mirror arcade power. While this made the system difficult to develop for, it pushed the boundaries of home hardware. Sega eventually moved forward with the Dreamcast in 1998. The Saturn remains a key study in how hardware architecture and market timing influence gaming history.
