The Second Green Revolution is a big idea about farming. People think it is needed to feed more people on Earth. The world's population is growing every single year. This change is named after an older time of farming changes. Some people want to use science to make better food. They want to make sure everyone has enough to eat. This idea helps us think about how to sustain life.

One way this works is through genetic engineering. This is a way to change how crops grow. Scientists want to make crops that grow more food. These plants could survive a drought when there is no rain. They might also survive a flood with too much water. New crops could resist pests or disease. This lets farmers grow more food on the same land.

Many people have talked about this idea for a long time. A writer named Peter Steinhart used the term in 1981. He wrote about using science to increase crop yields. Sakiko Fukuda-Parr wrote a book about this in 2006. Her book is called The Gene Revolution. She looked at how these crops affect development. These writers helped people understand the new ways of farming.

Bill Gates is a person who supports this idea. He spoke about it at the World Food Prize. He says small farms need to be more productive. This can help fight hunger and poverty. Many poor people get food from small plots of land. Gates has given over 1.4 billion US dollars to farming. He wants crops to grow in harsher weather.

Not everyone agrees on the best way to farm. Some people think we must fix how food is shared. They say social inequity leads to hunger. This means the way people are treated is not fair. Other people want to use organic agriculture. This uses natural ways to grow food. They also like urban agriculture in cities. They want to use smaller farms to help the Earth.
