He wanted people to see the world clearly.

Salgado worked on very large projects that took a long time. He traveled to more than 120 different countries. He often made books filled with hundreds of images. Some of his big collections are named Workers and Migrations. He also made a project called Genesis between 2004 and 2011. This project showed landscapes and people living in traditional ways. He wanted these photos to help humans rediscover themselves in nature. He even took photos of coffee workers to teach people about their drinks.

Before he was a photographer, Salgado studied something very different. He was trained to be an economist. He earned a degree from the Federal University of Espírito Santo. He also studied at the University of São Paulo and the University of Paris. He worked for the International Coffee Organization and the World Bank. It was while traveling to Africa for work that he started taking photos. In 1973, he decided to leave his career in economics behind. He chose to become a photographer instead.

Salgado received many important awards during his long career. In 1982, he won the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Grant. He also won the Hasselblad Award in 1989. In 1993, he received medals from the Royal Photographic Society. He was even a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in France. His work was so famous that a film was made about him. This film is called The Salt of the Earth. It was directed by Wim Wenders and his son, Juliano.

Salgado also cared deeply about protecting the environment. He and his wife, Lélia Wanick Salgado, worked to help the earth. In 1998, they created the Instituto Terra in Brazil. They worked to restore a part of the Atlantic Forest. This group focuses on reforestation and teaching people about nature.

This shows how his art and his love for the planet went together. He lived in Paris for much of his life. He passed away in Paris on May 23, 2025, at age 81.
