He used his camera to document the human condition and the natural world. His work is highly valued for its deep social commentary and visual power. Salgado traveled to more than 120 different countries for his photographic projects. These images appeared in many press publications and large-scale books. His work has been shown in touring exhibitions across the entire globe. He served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador to support children worldwide.

Salgado's photographic style is defined by specific visual techniques. Critics often describe his work as an instantly recognizable combination of black-and-white composition and dramatic lighting. He used light and shadow to create a sense of depth and emotion. This method allowed him to capture the intense realities of his subjects. He focused on social documentary photography, which means he photographed real-life events and social issues. He often concentrated on the lives of workers in less developed nations. This approach helped bring global attention to specific human struggles.

His career was divided into several major long-term projects. These self-assigned projects were often published as massive, multi-image book collections. Some of his most significant works include *The Other Americas*, *Sahel*, *Workers*, and *Migrations*. Between 2004 and 2011, he worked on a massive project titled *Genesis*. This project aimed to present the unblemished faces of nature and humanity. It featured a series of photographs showing landscapes, wildlife, and human communities. These communities live in accordance with their ancestral traditions and cultures.

Salgado's journey to photography began through an unexpected path. He was born on February 8, 1944, in Aimorés, Brazil. He originally trained as an economist rather than an artist. He earned a BA from the Federal University of Espírito Santo. He also earned a master's degree from the University of São Paulo in 1968. Later, he earned a PhD from the University of Paris in 1971. He worked for the International Coffee Organization and traveled to Africa for the World Bank. It was during these African missions that he began taking serious photographs. In 1973, he decided to abandon economics to pursue photography full-time.

His professional life involved working with several major photographic organizations. He initially worked with the agencies Sygma and Gamma. In 1979, he joined the international cooperative known as Magnum Photos. He eventually left Magnum in 1994 to establish his own agency. Alongside his wife, Lélia Wanick Salgado, he formed Amazonas Images in Paris. This agency was created to represent his extensive body of work. His most famous specific images were taken at a Brazilian gold mine called Serra Pelada. These photos were captured between 1986 and 1989.

Salgado received many prestigious honors for his contributions to art. In 1982, he was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Grant. He received the Hasselblad Award in 1989. In 1992, he became a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was also awarded the Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal in 1993. Since 2016, he has been a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts at the Institut de France. His life and work were also documented in the 2014 film *The Salt of the Earth*. This documentary was directed by Wim Wenders and his son, Juliano Ribeiro Salgado.

Beyond photography, Salgado was deeply committed to environmentalism and reforestation. He and Lélia worked to restore a part of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. In 1998, they successfully turned this area into a nature reserve. They created the Instituto Terra to manage this mission. The institute focuses on reforestation, conservation, and environmental education.

This work shows how his artistic observations connected to physical action for the planet. Salgado lived much of his life in Paris. He passed away in Paris on May 23, 2025, at the age of 81.
