Sea krait

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sea kraits are special snakes. They live in both the sea and on land. This is called being semiaquatic.

These snakes have parts for both worlds. They have wide scales to move on land. They also have paddle-shaped tails for swimming. They can even climb up tall rocks.

Sea kraits hunt in the ocean. They like to hunt at night. They eat fish, crabs, and squid. Some sea kraits work with fish to find food. This helps them find prey in reef cracks.

They can dive very deep. They can go down 80 meters in one trip. They also travel over very large areas of water.

Sea kraits must come to land to lay eggs. They also go to land to digest their food.

These snakes have venom. This is a toxin that can make you sick. Most sea kraits are shy. Bites are rare. However, you should be careful if you handle them. Bites are more likely at night or if you grab them hard.
