Sea krait

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sea kraits are a unique group of venomous snakes. They belong to the genus Laticauda within the subfamily Laticaudinae. These animals are semiaquatic, meaning they live in both water and on land. This lifestyle makes them very different from fully aquatic sea snakes. While sea snakes live entirely in the ocean, sea kraits must return to the shore. They do this to digest their food and to lay their eggs. Because they use both environments, they have developed special physical features for both.

The physical design of a sea krait shows how it survives in two worlds. They possess morphological adaptations, which are body shapes that help them live in specific ways. To move on land, they have wide ventral scales. These are the large scales on their bellies that help them grip the ground. To swim, they have a tail that is vertically flattened into a paddle shape. Their nostrils are positioned on the sides of their heads. They also have a specific bone structure where the maxillary bone extends past the palatine bone.

Sea kraits have very interesting ways of finding food. They hunt in the ocean, specifically in the littoral zone of coastal waters and around coral reefs. Their diet consists mostly of moray and conger eels. They also eat squid, crabs, and various fish. Some species show amazing teamwork. Black-banded sea kraits form hunting alliances with yellow goatfish and bluefin trevally. These fish help flush prey out of narrow reef cracks, much like moray eels do. During a single hunting trip, a sea krait can dive as deep as 80 meters.

These snakes also have massive territories to explore. The blue-lipped sea krait has a hunting range between 615 and 1,660 square kilometers. The New Caledonian sea krait has an even larger range. It may cover between 1,380 and 4,500 square kilometers of surface area. To navigate these areas, they use their ability to climb vertical limestone rocks. This allows them to move easily between the sea and the coastal cliffs.

There are currently eight recognized species of sea krait. These include the yellow-lipped sea krait, the blue-lipped sea krait, and the New Caledonian sea krait. Other species are named Crocker's sea snake, Guinea's sea krait, and the Niue sea krait. Some scientists even suggest that the black-banded sea krait belongs in a different genus called Pseudolaticauda. The study of these snakes helps scientists understand convergent evolution. This is when different animals develop similar traits because they live in similar environments. Even though sea kraits and sea snakes are different, they both evolved to live in the water.

Sea kraits are found across many islands in South and Southeast Asia. Their range stretches from India in the west to Japan in the north. They also live as far southeast as Fiji. Sometimes, they wander toward the coasts of Australia and New Zealand. However, they do not stay there to breed. Because they are oviparous, they must lay eggs on land. Females return to the shore to mate and lay their eggs. During mating, males may form a ball around a female and move in patterns called caudocephalic waves.

While sea kraits are highly venomous, they are generally shy and reclusive. In New Caledonia, they are known as "tricot rayé," which means "striped sweater." In that area, children even play with them. Bites are very rare when the snakes are on land. However, bites are more likely to happen at night or if a snake is handled roughly in the water. If a bite occurs, it must be treated immediately. It is always best to observe these amazing creatures from a safe distance.
