A scythe is a special tool used for farming.

People use it to mow grass or harvest crops like wheat. It is much more than just a simple blade. For many, it represents a skilled way of working with the land. Even though machines like tractors are common now, the scythe is still used in parts of Europe and Asia. In places like Yakutia, Siberia, it remains a very important tool.

It helps people manage fields in ways that big machines cannot always do.

A scythe has two main parts that work together. The long handle is called a snaith, or snath.

It is usually made of wood but can sometimes be metal. The snaith often has two handles to help the person hold it. One handle is near the top and another is in the middle. At the bottom, a curved steel blade attaches at a sharp angle. Most people use a right-handed scythe where the blade sticks out to the left.

Some people use a cradle, which is a set of wooden fingers, to help catch grain heads.

The history of the scythe goes back a very long time.

Some evidence suggests people used them as far back as the Neolithic period. By the 16th century, the scythe was often used instead of the sickle for reaping crops. This was because it was easier on the body to use. In ancient Greek myths, the goddess Gaia gave a metal sickle to her son Kronos.

Throughout history, people have even changed scythes into weapons. They were used by many different cultures to feed their people.

Using a scythe requires a lot of practice and rhythm.

A person holds the handles and swings the blade in a long, smooth arc. This creates a neat row of cut grass called a windrow. Beginners often make mistakes like hitting the ground or using a blade that is too long. To keep the tool working, the metal must stay very sharp. Workers use a process called peening to fix the edge with a hammer. They also use a stone, called a whetstone, to keep it smooth while they work.

You might recognize the scythe from stories or art.

It is often shown in pictures of the Grim Reaper. In some cultures, it is a symbol of togetherness. For example, in the mountains of Romania, farmers work in teams to finish their harvest. After the hard work is done, they often celebrate with a small feast. This shows how a simple tool can bring a whole community together through shared tradition and skill.
