It has two main parts. The long handle is called a snaith. It is often made of wood. A curved steel blade is attached to the bottom.

Most scythes have the blade on the left side. This helps the person mow in a steady rhythm. They swing the blade in a long arc. This leaves a neat row of cut grass on the ground.

Using a scythe is a skilled task. It can take a long time to learn. Beginners often need a mentor to help them. They must learn how to set the handles correctly. They also must learn how to swing without hitting the ground.

Farmers must keep the blade very sharp. They use a stone to do this. This step is called honing. Sometimes, they use a hammer to fix the edge. This is called peening. In some places, people work in teams to finish the job. In the mountains of Romania, farmers still use scythes every year. They often have a feast after they finish their work.
