A scrubber is a special tool used to clean dirty air.

Many factories and large ships create exhaust gas. This gas often contains dust or harmful gases that can hurt the environment. Scrubbers act as air pollution control devices to fix this. They can remove tiny particles or specific gases from these exhaust streams. This work is very important for keeping our air and water cleaner. Some scrubbers even help us save heat from hot gases to use later.

There are different ways these machines work. A wet scrubber uses a liquid to wash the gas.

Water is the most common liquid used to catch dust. Some liquids are even chosen to target specific chemicals like ammonia. The gas and liquid must touch to work well. To make this better, machines use spray nozzles or tall towers. This increases the surface area so the liquid can catch more pollutants.

In some cases, this process can even create a visible plume of steam.

Dry scrubbers work in a different way. They do not make the exhaust gas wet. Instead, they use a dry material called a sorbent.

In a system called dry sorbent injection, this material is added to the gas. The material reacts with acid gases to turn them into solid salts. These salts are then caught by a separate device. Another type is a spray dryer absorber. This uses a liquid mixture to catch gases but evaporates the water quickly. This leaves the gas dry as it exits the tower.

People have used scrubbers for a long time. One early use was in a submarine named Ictíneo I in 1859.

Today, they are used on many things like medical waste incinerators. They are also used in solar and LED manufacturing processes. On large ships, scrubbers help them follow international rules. These rules limit how much sulfur can be in the fuel.

Because of this, many shipping companies install these systems on their vessels.

While scrubbers help, they also create new tasks. They move pollutants from the air into a liquid or solid form.

This waste must be handled very carefully. For example, some waste must be buried in special landfills. However, some waste can be reused for good things. Limestone scrubbers can create a material used to make drywall. We must also keep scrubbers clean to prevent germs from growing. In 2005, a few unclean scrubbers caused an illness in Norway.

Keeping these machines working correctly helps protect everyone.
