A screwdriver is a handy tool used to turn screws.

Most manual versions have a handle and a metal shaft. The shaft is usually made of tough steel. This helps the tool resist bending or twisting. At the end of the shaft is the tip. You place this tip into the screw head before turning.

Many people now use power drills instead. These are often faster and easier to use. They can also drill holes in many materials.

How a screwdriver works depends on the tip and the screw. The tip must match the shape of the screw head perfectly. If the tip is the wrong size, it might damage the screw.

Some tips are made with a dark coating. This helps you see the tip against the screw more easily. Other tips are ridged to give you a better grip. Some screwdrivers even have magnetic tips. This helps them hold onto small metal screws while you work.

These tools have a very long history. The earliest documented screwdrivers appeared in the late Middle Ages. They were likely invented in Germany or France during the 15th century. One old manuscript from 1475 to 1490 shows them.

Back then, they had pear-shaped handles. They were only used for simple slotted screws. For a long time, they were not very common. They were mostly used for things like making firearms. As screws became easier to make, the screwdriver became more popular.

Many different types of screws and drivers exist today. The most common is the flat-blade type for slotted screws. Another famous type is the Phillips screw.

P.L. Robertson began selling socket-head screws in 1908. These are very strong and resist wear. Later, Henry F. Phillips patented his cross-shaped screw. His design became very popular after the 1936 Cadillac trial. Today, the Phillips screw is used all over the world. Many tools now use interchangeable bits to save space.

Handle design has changed to help people work better.

Old handles were often made of wood or metal. Modern handles are often made of plastic or rubber. Many handles are not round. They might be hexagonal or oval instead. This shape helps you grip the tool tightly. It also stops the tool from rolling away when you set it down. Some handles even have soft parts for extra comfort. This makes using the tool much easier for your hands.
