A screenplay is a special kind of written work. It serves as a blueprint for movies, television shows, or video games.

Screenwriters create these scripts to guide everyone on a film set. Some scripts are original stories made from scratch. Other scripts are adaptations of books or other writing. The script tells the story through movements, actions, and expressions. It also includes the dialogue that characters speak to one another. This written plan helps turn an idea into something we can watch on a screen.

Writing a screenplay follows a very specific way of working. The main parts are called action and dialogue. Action is written in the present tense. It describes only what an audience can see or hear. This includes things like a character walking or a loud sound effect.

Dialogue is the spoken word and sits in a center column. A unique part of a script is the slug line. This is a heading at the start of every scene. It tells the crew if the scene is inside or outside. It also names the location and the time of day.

Scripts have changed a lot since movies first began. In the early silent era, a script was often just one paragraph. Sometimes it was even just a single sentence! As films became longer, writers began using scenarios to keep the story organized. In 1902, the film A Trip to the Moon used scene headings. In 1903, The Great Train Robbery used detailed action descriptions. Later, continuity scripts were made to list specific shots. This helped the filmmaking process run much more smoothly.

History shows that scripts also helped with the business of movies. In the early 1900s, Thomas H. Ince helped invent a new way to make films. He used detailed written materials to help manage production. This helped studio executives plan budgets more accurately. By the time the film Casablanca was made in 1942, scripts included technical instructions and dialogue. After the 1950s, the way scripts were written changed again. By the time Chinatown was made in 1974, the master-scene script became the standard. This made scripts easier for independent producers to read.

Today, screenwriters use many tools to follow these rules. Most scripts use a 12-point font called Courier. A common rule of thumb is that one page equals one minute of film.

Writers use special computer programs to help them format everything correctly. Programs like Final Draft, Celtx, and Fade In are very popular. These tools help writers follow the studio format. This makes the script look professional to producers and agents. Whether on paper or sent by email, these scripts are the foundation of storytelling.
