Hildegard said she saw these visions starting at age five. She believed they came from the voice of heaven.

The book has three main parts. Each part reflects the Trinity. The first part has six visions about creation. The second part has seven visions about the Church. The third part is the longest. It has thirteen visions about the kingdom of God.

Scivias includes 35 small paintings called miniatures. These help show her visions. The book also has 14 songs at the end. Some people think her visions were caused by migraines. Others think they came from a plant called ergot. Even so, many people still read her work today. It is her most famous book.
