A school shooting is an armed attack at a school using a firearm. Many of these events are also called mass shootings because they cause many injuries. The United States has seen a very high number of these attacks. Between 2009 and 2018, the U.S. had over 50 times more shootings than all other G7 nations combined.

These events often lead to big debates. People discuss gun rights and gun control laws. They also talk about school safety rules. These discussions happen because people want to find ways to keep students safe.

Experts study many factors to understand why these attacks happen. One major reason is how people get guns. Since 1999, 80% of guns used by young shooters came from a home or a relative's home.

This makes the availability of guns a very important topic. Some people even ask if parents should be held responsible for not locking up weapons. By 2018, four parents had been convicted for this reason. This shows how much the issue affects families and laws.

Many shooters also face difficult social problems. For example, 75% of school shooters had been bullied or showed signs of being bullied. Bullying often involves a bully, a victim, and bystanders. This can make a student feel very humiliated. Some victims may become angry or try to restore justice in a violent way. Other studies show that motives like revenge affect 61% of attackers. Others may be trying to solve a problem or seek attention.

It is also hard to create a single profile of a shooter. In the past, the FBI described shooters as a specific type of person. They thought they were mostly lonely, awkward, Caucasian males. However, newer studies show that shooters come from many different backgrounds. Some lived in foster homes, while others had stable families. Most had not even gotten into trouble at school before. This makes it very hard for experts to predict who might act violently. They cannot simply look for one specific type of person.

Finally, scientists look at how the brain and mental health play a role. During the teenage years, the brain goes through a process called synaptic pruning. This is when the brain removes unused connections to get stronger. The pre-frontal cortex, which helps with decisions, is the last part to finish growing. Because of this, teenagers might rely more on the amygdala. This part of the brain handles emotions and impulses. This can lead to riskier decisions. While many shooters show signs of mental illness, most people with mental illness are not violent.
