Mass murder is a very serious crime involving many deaths. It usually happens in one place. These acts often occur over a short period of time. One person or a group may be responsible. This is different from a spree killer. A spree killer moves between many different locations. It is also different from a serial killer. Serial killers kill people over a very long time.

Different countries have different ways to define this crime. In the United States, it means killing three or more people. This rule applies when there is no cooling-off period. A cooling-off period is a break between killings. In the United Kingdom, the number is four or more people. The United States passed a law in 2012. This law helped federal agencies work with state police. It clarified the term mass killing for law enforcement.

Many different groups have caused mass killings in history. Some terrorist groups use these acts to reach political goals. For example, al-Qaeda killed 2,977 people on September 11, 2001. In 2004, al-Qaeda caused 193 deaths in Madrid. Other groups have caused harm in many places. The Islamic State killed 1,095 people at Camp Speicher. In 2014, the Tehrik-i-Taliban killed 156 people in Peshawar, Pakistan. These events are very sad parts of history.

Some groups called cults have also caused many deaths. These groups often follow a specific leader. In 1978, 919 people died in Jonestown, Guyana. This happened with Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple. In 1994, 74 people died in the Order of the Solar Temple. This group acted in Canada, Switzerland, and France. In 1995, Aum Shinrikyo killed 14 people in Tokyo, Japan. Even governments have ordered mass murders in the past. Soviet leader Joseph Stalin ordered the killing of 7,000 Polish prisoners. This was done by Vasili Blokhin over 28 days.

Law enforcement officers work hard to stop these crimes. They study past events to learn how to react. They look at the Columbine High School massacre for lessons. In that event, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 14 people. Police now have new ideas for how to act fast. They suggest that people should flee, hide, or fight. Quick action from bystanders or police can save lives. These efforts help keep communities safer from violence.
