A sauna is a special room built for heat.

People go there to experience dry or wet heat sessions. The high heat and steam make bathers perspire, which means they sweat. This experience is very important to many cultures around the world. In Finland, the sauna is a huge part of daily life. Some people even have saunas in Ferris wheels in Helsinki!

Many people find the heat relaxing and refreshing.

There are different ways to make a sauna work. In a traditional Finnish smoke sauna, called a savusauna, people burn wood for 6 to 8 hours. This heats up a pile of rocks known as a kiuas.

When you throw water on these hot stones, it creates steam. Finns call this steam and heat "löyly."

Modern saunas often use electric stoves instead of wood. These electric stoves can heat up in just 15 to 30 minutes. You can control the heat by sitting on higher or lower benches.

Saunas have a very long and interesting history. In Korea, people use domed stone structures called hanjeungmak. These were mentioned in records from the 15th century.

Buddhist monks even ran clinics called hanjeungso to help sick people. In the West, saunas began in Finland using pits dug into slopes. Some ancient stone structures in Scotland also used steam. Archaeological sites in Greenland have even shown very old farm saunas. These old sites had many scorched stones from the heat.

Many different places have their own unique sauna traditions. The smoke sauna tradition in Võromaa was listed as a special cultural treasure in 2014. In 2020, Finnish sauna culture was also added to a special global list.

Some saunas are quite large and can hold many people. The Koi Sauna in Germany is one of the largest. It can hold 150 people and even has a koi aquarium. There is even a sauna in Poland that holds 300 people!

Some people use a towel to cover their heads. In Russia, people might wear a felt hat called a banya hat. This helps protect the head from the heat. You must always be careful around the hot stove rocks. They can cause burns if you get too close. Always listen to your body while you enjoy the warmth.
