It often feels like a joke, but it can be mean. People use it to tease or to show they are angry. Some experts call it hostility disguised as humor.

Many people use sarcasm with irony. Irony is when you say the opposite of what you mean. For example, you might say, "What a fine musician you are!" to someone who plays poorly.

Sarcasm can also be a direct statement. You might tell someone they cannot play a single song correctly.

When people speak, they use their voice to show sarcasm. In English, people might speak slowly or in a low pitch. In Cantonese, people might raise the pitch of their voice.

Sarcasm can be hard to understand in writing. This is because you cannot hear the person's tone. Some people even try to make special marks for it. These marks help show that a sentence is sarcastic.
