It sits in the northwest part of the country inside the Sula Valley. The city is about 50 kilometers away from the Caribbean Sea. It is the second largest city in Honduras after Tegucigalpa. It is also the largest city in Central America that is not a capital city. Many people call it the main industrial center of the nation. This means it is a place where many big businesses and factories work.

The city has a tropical climate that stays warm all year. There is a dry season from January through May. The rest of the months make up the wet season. Because it is in this region, the city can face big storms called hurricanes. These storms often form in the Caribbean or near Western Africa. The weather brings both heat and plenty of rain to the valley. This cycle of wet and dry weather shapes life in the city.

Long ago, the Sula Valley was home to 50,000 native people. These people were part of the Mayan and Aztec civilizations. They used the area as a place for local trade. Later, Spanish explorers arrived in the region. Don Pedro de Alvarado founded a Spanish town here on June 27, 1536. He named it Villa de Señor San Pedro de Puerto Caballos. At first, the new town only had 35 Spanish citizens.

As time passed, the city grew in new ways. In the 1870s and 1880s, the banana trade helped the city grow. A man named Samuel Zemurray helped build railroads and fruit companies there. This connected the city to the coast at Puerto Cortés. Today, the city is a huge place for many different jobs. The central urban area has about 701,200 people. The whole metropolitan area has 1,445,598 people.

The city is organized in a very neat way. Most cities built by the Spanish use a grid of quadrants. In San Pedro Sula, avenues run from north to south. Streets run from east to west. First Street and First Avenue mark the very center of the city. This center divides the city into four main sections. There are many different neighborhoods like Barrio Guamilito and Colonia Moderna. People also go to the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano for sports.
