It is the biggest metropolitan area in Central America. Many people call the city by its nickname, Guate. It serves as the main center for politics, culture, and money in the region.

Long before the modern city existed, the Maya people lived here.

They built a huge ceremonial center called Kaminaljuyu. This was a very important place for trading obsidian, which is a volcanic glass. The Maya settlement grew strong about 2,300 years ago. Later, the city faced many changes due to nature. Droughts and a shrinking lake helped cause the collapse of the old Maya site. This shows how much the land and weather can shape where people live.

The present city was started by the Spanish. They moved the capital here after a huge earthquake in 1773.

Because of this, people rebuilt the city with a more modern style. They used wider streets and a grid layout. Some of these designs were inspired by cities like Paris and Washington, D.C. Today, the city also has very large landmarks. The Metropolitan Cathedral is a famous neo-classical building in the center.
