It sits on the banks of the Mahanadi river, which flows to the west of the city. This river separates the urban areas of Sambalpur from Burla and Hirakud. As the fifth-largest city in Odisha, it serves as a vital center for trade and education. The city is a significant hub within the state's geography and economy. It is known for its deep historical roots and its unique cultural traditions.

The geography of the region is defined by its relationship with the Mahanadi river. The river flows past the city and moves upstream toward the Hirakud Dam.

This dam is a massive engineering feat. It is the longest earthen dam in the world. It also creates the largest artificial lake in Asia. Because the city sits on the river, low-lying areas are prone to flooding. The region is also classified under Zone-3 seismic numbers. This means there is a possibility of earthquakes in the area.

Sambalpur experiences an extreme type of climate throughout the year. The hot season begins in the first week of March and lasts until late June. In May, temperatures can climb as high as 45 degrees Celsius.

This is followed by the monsoon season, which brings rain from the southwest. During this time, the relative humidity often rises above 75 percent. The most pleasant months are from October to February. During this period, daytime temperatures stay below 35 degrees Celsius. Nighttime temperatures can drop to about 15 degrees Celsius.

The history of Sambalpur stretches back to prehistoric settlements. The city's name is derived from the Hindu Goddess Samalei, the reigning deity of the region.

Ancient records also refer to the area as Hirakhanda or Sambalaka. A Roman geographer named Ptolemy mentioned a city called Sambalak in the second century CE. He noted that this city was a producer of diamonds. Over many centuries, various dynasties controlled the territory. These included the Gupta emperors, the Chalukya kings, and the Somavamshi dynasty. Later, the Chauhan Rajputs established rule in western Orissa.

Religious history in the region is also very complex. Some scholars discuss the development of Vajrayana Buddhism in this area. This form of Tantric Buddhism introduced specific practices like mantras, mudras, and mandalas. It also included six Tantric Abhicharas, which are specific practices. These sects sought to improve the social dignity of people. They promoted a more liberal attitude toward women and denied the caste system. This religious evolution occurred alongside the growth of many Hindu temples and structures.

Today, Sambalpur is a crucial transport and educational center. It is a major railway junction for the East Coast Railway zone.

These roads link the city to the rest of India and other parts of Odisha. Education is a major focus, with many important institutes located here. These include Sambalpur University and the Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur.

The economy of the city relies heavily on trade and industry. Many residents are self-employed or work for salaries. The city is famous for its handloom textiles, particularly the Sambalpuri sari. Gole Bazaar is a central area for this type of merchandising. Other economic activities include the trade of forest products like Kendu leaves. Large-scale industry also plays a role, such as Mahanadi Coalfields Limited. This company produced a profit before tax of Rs 4039.30 crore during 2010–2011. Nearby Hirakud also hosts power-intensive industries like aluminium smelters and steel mills.
