Samantha Cristoforetti is a highly accomplished Italian astronaut representing the European Space Agency (ESA). She is a pioneer in space exploration, serving as the first Italian astronaut and the second woman sent into space by the ESA.

Beyond her role in orbit, she is a former fighter pilot for the Italian Air Force and a trained mechanical engineer. Her career demonstrates how diverse scientific and technical skills combine to prepare someone for the rigors of spaceflight. She has also been recognized as one of the most influential people in Europe.

Cristoforetti's path to the stars was shaped by both education and personal inspiration. As a child in Malè, Italy, she was deeply influenced by the science fiction series Star Trek. This interest led her to attend Space Camp at age 18. She pursued advanced studies in mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich. Later, she studied aeronautics in France and chemistry in Russia.

These various disciplines provided the foundation for her complex work on the International Space Station (ISS).

Her professional training involved mastering high-performance machinery. As a lieutenant and fighter pilot in the Italian Air Force, she logged over 500 flight hours. She operated six different types of military aircraft, including the T-38 and the AM-X. In 2009, she was selected as an astronaut from a massive pool of 8,000 applicants. This selection process required intense preparation for the unique challenges of micro-gravity environments.

Cristoforetti's first major mission was named Futura, which launched in November 2014. She traveled aboard the Soyuz TMA-15M spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. After docking with the ISS, she spent 199 days, 16 hours, in orbit.

At the time, this set a record for the longest uninterrupted spaceflight by a European astronaut. It also stood as the longest single spaceflight by a woman until it was surpassed by Peggy Whitson in 2017 and later by Christina Koch.

During her time in space, Cristoforetti conducted vital scientific research. She worked with Spirulina algae to study how photosynthesis functions in recycled air environments. She also used the rHEALTH ONE, a powerful biomedical analyzer, during her second mission, Minerva. This device uses laser-based sheath-flow analysis to collect over 100 million raw data points.

This technology helps scientists understand how spaceflight affects the human body, including bone loss and kidney stones.

Her second mission in 2022 involved significant physical tasks outside the station. On July 21, 2022, she completed a spacewalk that lasted 7 hours and 5 minutes. During this EVA, or extravehicular activity, she helped set up the European Robotic Arm. She was the first European astronaut to use the Orlan spacesuit since 1999.

This mission also saw her take command of the ISS Expedition 68 on September 28, 2022.

Cristoforetti also works to connect space science with the public through outreach. She created the "Mission X: Train Like an Astronaut" program for students aged 8 to 12. This program encouraged children to improve their fitness while she trained for her missions. Additionally, she uses amateur radio to communicate with schools from the ISS. Through these efforts, she shows how space exploration relates to health, technology, and education on Earth.
