Two groups of people tried to visit the station. The first group could not enter. The second group, called Soyuz 11, stayed for 23 days. They did many science tests. Sadly, the crew died during their trip back to Earth. A small valve failed. This caused them to lose their air.
After this, the station stayed in space for a while. It ran out of fuel. On October 11, 1971, it fell toward Earth. It burned up in the sky. Salyut 1 was a big step for space travel.

It was designed by Grigor Gurzadyan from the Byurakan Observatory in Armenia. The observatory used a mirror telescope of the Mersenne system. It also used a spectrograph of the Wadsworth system. This allowed the crew to capture ultraviolet light from stars. Crew member Viktor Patsayev became the first person to operate a telescope outside Earth's atmosphere. He used it to study stars like Vega and Beta Centauri. The station also conducted military experiments. These included the Svinets radiometer and the Orion ultraviolet instrument. The latter was used to study rocket exhaust plumes.

Two crewed missions attempted to visit Salyut 1. The first was the Soyuz 10 mission. This crew reached the station and performed a soft-docking. However, the hard-docking process failed due to technical malfunctions. The crew could not enter the station and had to return to Earth. The second mission was the successful Soyuz 11 mission. This crew arrived on June 7, 1971. They stayed aboard the station for 23 days. During this time, they completed 362 orbits around the Earth. They studied Earth's geology, meteorology, and geography. They also performed medical studies to see how space flight affects the human body.
Despite the scientific success, the Soyuz 11 mission ended in tragedy. As the capsule reentered the atmosphere, a pressure-equalization valve failed. This malfunction caused the cabin atmosphere to be lost. The three crew members—Georgy Dobrovolsky, Viktor Patsayev, and Vladislav Volkov—died of asphyxia. They became the only humans to have died above the Kármán line. This event led to a major change in space safety. Engineers determined that all future Soyuz missions must require the use of pressure suits. This was because the crew had not been wearing them during the mission.
The mission of Salyut 1 was eventually terminated. The station had stayed in orbit for 175 days. By September 1971, the station was running out of fuel. The Soviet Union was also busy redesigning the Soyuz spacecraft to include pressure suits. Because the redesign took so long, the station could not be visited again. On October 11, 1971, the main engines were fired for a deorbit maneuver. The station reentered the atmosphere and burned up over the Pacific Ocean. This concluded the first chapter of the Salyut program.

Salyut 1 left a lasting legacy for future space travel. The Salyut program continued with five more successful launches of seven additional stations. The design principles used here formed the basis for later Soviet stations like Mir. In fact, the final module of the program, Zvezda, became a core part of the International Space Station. The Zvezda module remains in orbit today. Salyut 1 proved that humans could live in space for long periods. It provided the data needed to build much larger and safer homes in orbit.
