Engineers took a part of a large rocket called the S-IVB stage. Usually, this part only carries fuel during a launch. For Skylab, it became a large orbital workshop where people could live.

The station had many parts like an airlock for going outside. It also had a docking adapter to connect to other spacecraft. Solar arrays caught sunlight to provide electrical power for the crew.

Many people had dreamed of space stations long before Skylab flew. A rocket engineer named Wernher von Braun shared many ideas about this. He even wrote articles in a magazine called Collier's. He imagined large stations that might rotate to create gravity.

He thought these stations would help people travel to the Moon or Mars. Later, NASA created the Apollo Applications Program to turn these ideas into real missions. This helped keep many workers busy after the Moon landings ended.

During the launch, a protective shield tore away from the workshop. This caused the station to get very hot from the Sun. It also damaged the solar panels used for power. The first crew had to perform a massive repair in space. They fixed the panels and the heat shade to save the station. This was the first time such a big repair happened in orbit. One crew even stayed for 84 days, which was a new record.

Operated by NASA, it served as a massive orbital laboratory. The station was occupied for approximately 24 weeks between May 1973 and February 1974. During this time, three different astronaut crews lived aboard the station. These crews were known as Skylab 2, Skylab 3, and Skylab 4. Skylab allowed scientists to study the Sun and the Earth from space. It was a vital stepping stone for human space exploration.

The construction of Skylab was an exercise in repurposing existing technology. Engineers used the S-IVB, which is the third stage of a Saturn V rocket. Instead of being discarded after launch, this stage became the station's orbital workshop. This workshop provided the main habitable space for the astronauts. The station also included an Apollo Telescope Mount for solar study.

Other parts included a multiple docking adapter with two ports. An airlock module provided hatches for extravehicular activity, or EVA. This allowed astronauts to work outside the station. Electrical power was provided by solar arrays and fuel cells.

Skylab's design evolved from several different scientific concepts. Early ideas included a "wet workshop."

This concept involved using a fuel tank as a living space. Engineers would vent the hydrogen fuel before adding equipment. Another idea was a large, rotating station. Rocket engineer Wernher von Braun envisioned such a station. He imagined it would use rotation to create artificial gravity. His vision included 80 people working as astronomers and meteorologists. However, the development of transistors and solar cells changed these needs. Smaller, uncrewed satellites could now perform many tasks once reserved for large stations.

NASA managed the project through the Apollo Applications Program.

This program was created to keep the Apollo workforce active. After the Moon landings, NASA needed new missions for its employees. The program studied how to modify Apollo hardware for science. They looked at many different mission profiles. Some involved using the Lunar Module for extended stays. Others focused on using the S-IVB stage for laboratories. This work eventually led to the specific design of Skylab.

Skylab faced a critical crisis immediately after its launch. A micrometeoroid shield tore away from the orbital workshop. This event also damaged one of the main solar panel arrays. The second array became jammed, which limited electrical power. The loss of the shield also meant intense solar heating. This heat threatened to make the station unusable. The first crew had to perform a major repair in space. They deployed a replacement heat shade and freed the solar panels. This was the first time a repair of this scale was done in orbit.

The scientific results from Skylab were significant. The Apollo Telescope Mount provided unprecedented views of the Sun. Astronauts also used the Earth Resources Experiment Package. This package used sensors to record data in visible, infrared, and microwave regions. They took thousands of photographs of our planet. These images helped scientists understand Earth's systems. Skylab also set new records for human endurance. The Skylab 4 crew spent 84 days in orbit. This surpassed the 23-day record held by the Soyuz 11 crew.

Eventually, the station's orbit began to decay. NASA could not stop the station from falling toward Earth.

Ground controllers tried to adjust the orbit to protect people. They targeted the south Indian Ocean to minimize risk. On July 11, 1979, Skylab entered the atmosphere and disintegrated. Debris was scattered across the Indian Ocean and Western Australia. This event marked the end of the Skylab era. NASA's focus then moved toward the Space Shuttle. The lessons from Skylab helped shape future projects like Spacelab and the International Space Station.
