These tiles were much better than older, single-use heat shields. They could be replaced individually if they were damaged. However, installing these tiles was a slow process. For example, Columbia arrived at the Kennedy Space Center with 6,000 tiles still needing installation. The development of the RS-25 engines also faced many challenges, including nozzle failures and broken turbine blades.
Despite the risks, the shuttle performed incredible feats in space. It was used to launch the Hubble Space Telescope and many interplanetary probes. The shuttle was also essential for the construction of the International Space Station (ISS). 
When the mission ended, the orbiter returned to Earth by gliding to a runway. Most landings occurred at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
