The shuttle then glided like a plane to a runway. It did many jobs, like helping build the International Space Station.

Launching the shuttle was a step-by-step process. First, the shuttle launched vertically like a tall rocket.

It used three main RS-25 engines and two solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. These boosters helped provide the power to lift off. The SRBs were jettisoned, or dropped away, before the shuttle reached orbit. Next, the large external tank, or ET, was dropped away. Finally, the orbiter used its own engines to reach its final path.

Building the shuttle took many years of hard work. NASA and the Air Force worked together on the design. In 1971, leaders decided on a design with a delta-wing orbiter. This shape helped the shuttle fly during reentry. The first vehicle, named Enterprise, was built in 1976 for testing.

It did not have engines or heat shields. Later, engineers worked on the main engines and special heat tiles. These tiles protected the aluminum body from extreme heat.

There were five main orbiter vehicles in the fleet.

The first four were Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, and Atlantis. A fifth orbiter, Endeavour, was built in 1991 to replace Challenger.

Sadly, two of the orbiters were lost in accidents. Challenger was lost in 1986, and Columbia was lost in 2003.

These accidents resulted in the deaths of 14 astronauts. The fleet finally retired after Atlantis finished its last flight in 2011.

The shuttle performed many important jobs in space. It launched the Hubble Space Telescope and many other satellites. It also helped build the International Space Station.

The assembly included the Orbiter Vehicle (OV), two solid rocket boosters (SRBs), and an expendable external tank (ET). The three RS-25 main engines on the orbiter and the two SRBs provided the initial thrust.

Finally, the orbiter used its two Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) engines to reach its final orbit. This sequence ensured the heavy fuel and boosters were dropped once they were no longer needed.

Designing the shuttle involved many different ideas and technologies. In the late 1930s, the German government studied a winged rocket called the Silbervogel. Later, the U.S. Air Force explored reusable gliders like the X-20 Dyna-Soar. NASA and the Air Force collaborated on various "lifting bodies" to test flight characteristics.

These tests helped engineers understand how to land a vehicle from high altitudes without engines. In 1971, leaders decided on a delta-wing design. This specific wing shape was chosen to handle the heat and pressure of reentry. This design allowed the orbiter to act as a spaceplane during its return to Earth.

Building the shuttle fleet was a massive industrial task. The first vehicle, Enterprise, was built in 1976 for testing.

It lacked engines and heat shielding because it was used for Approach and Landing Tests. The four main operational orbiters were Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, and Atlantis.

After the loss of Challenger in 1986, NASA built a fifth orbiter named Endeavour.

The fleet was eventually retired after Atlantis finished its final flight on July 21, 2011.

Safety and protection were critical during the design process. The orbiter was made of lightweight aluminum. To survive the heat of reentry, it used a thermal protection system of ceramic tiles. These tiles were much better than older, single-use heat shields. They could be replaced individually if they were damaged. However, installing these tiles was a slow process. For example, Columbia arrived at the Kennedy Space Center with 6,000 tiles still needing installation. The development of the RS-25 engines also faced many challenges, including nozzle failures and broken turbine blades.

Despite the risks, the shuttle performed incredible feats in space. It was used to launch the Hubble Space Telescope and many interplanetary probes. The shuttle was also essential for the construction of the International Space Station (ISS).

It participated in the Shuttle-Mir program with Russia to build international cooperation. The fleet's total mission time reached 1,323 days. These missions expanded our knowledge of the universe and our ability to live in space.

When the mission ended, the orbiter returned to Earth by gliding to a runway. Most landings occurred at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Some landings took place at Edwards Air Force Base in California. If the shuttle landed in California, a modified Boeing 747 called the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) flew it back to Florida. This era of spaceflight ended in 2011. For several years, the U.S. relied on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft to reach the ISS. This changed in May 2020 with the launch of the Crew Dragon Demo-2 mission.
