Saltasauridae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Saltasauridae were a family of long-necked dinosaurs. They lived a long time ago. We call these dinosaurs sauropods.

Most were smaller than other sauropods. They were plant eaters. They had tiny, peg-like teeth. These teeth could not chew food. Instead, they stripped leaves from plants. The plants stayed in their big guts to break down.

Their long necks helped them reach many plants. This saved them power. Many had scutes on their backs. Scutes are bony plates in the skin. These plates acted like armor.

Scientists found fossils on many continents. They found them in South America and Africa. They also found them in Asia and Europe. One large member was called Alamosaurus. It lived in North America. It was one of the last sauropods to go extinct. These dinosaurs were very successful. They lived all over the world.
