A leader named Mahatma Gandhi led a famous walk.

It was called the Salt March. It began on March 12, 1930. Gandhi wanted to fight for Indian self-rule. At that time, the British ruled India. The British had a law about salt. This law gave them a monopoly. A monopoly means only one group can make or sell a thing. People had to pay a tax to buy salt. This tax hurt poor people the most. Gandhi used a way of protest called satyagraha. This word means "truth-force." It means using truth and love to fight for what is right.

On April 6, they reached Dandi. Gandhi made salt from sea water. This broke the British law. Millions of Indians then broke the salt laws too. This helped the movement for freedom grow. It even inspired leaders in America later on.
