Gandhi went to London to study law. He wanted to be a lawyer. Later, he moved to South Africa. He lived there for 21 years. In South Africa, he used nonviolent resistance. This means he fought for rights without using violence.

Gandhi returned to India in 1915. He led many people to seek freedom. He wanted India to rule itself. This was called swaraj. He led a famous march to the sea. He walked 400 km to pick up salt.

In 1947, India became free. But the land was split into two parts. This created much fighting between groups. Gandhi worked hard to stop the violence. He used hunger strikes to ask for peace. Sadly, Gandhi was killed in 1948. Many people call him the Father of the Nation.
