Long ago, India was divided into different areas. Some lands were part of British India. Other lands were called princely states.

In these states, local rulers held power. These rulers had many titles. Some were called Maharaja or Raja. Others were called Nawab or Nizam.

The British called all these leaders "princes." This helped the British keep a sense of rank.

These states were all very different. Some were huge and had many people. Hyderabad had over 16 million people. Jammu and Kashmir was also very large.

Other states were tiny. One small state called Lawa had fewer than 3,000 people.

As time went on, the British grew stronger. They limited what the princes could do. Later, leaders like Mahatma Gandhi asked for self-rule. In 1947, most states joined India or Pakistan. This changed the map of the world forever.
