Nonviolent resistance

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sometimes people want to change the world. They do not use weapons or fighting. Instead, they use nonviolent resistance. This means they use peaceful ways to reach a goal. They might hold marches or sing songs. They might also refuse to pay taxes.

Many famous leaders have used these ways. Mahatma Gandhi is a very popular leader. He led a famous Salt March. The United Nations celebrates his birthday every year. Other leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. also used peace to seek change.

People use many different tactics. Some people use boycotts. This is when people stop buying things from a group. Others use picketing. This means standing outside a place to show they disagree. Some use protest art or music.

These movements can be very strong. From 1966 to 1999, they helped change fifty countries. In Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, people used a "Singing revolution." This helped them become independent again. Nonviolent ways help people stand up for what is fair.
